Оne legged dancer

She said: ‘I always loved dancing but my parents wanted me to study so I worked hard to become a nurse. The accident changed my life; it not only took my leg but it gave me the determination to fulfill my dreams. Now I’m dancing for a living and I love it.’ Subhreet used to only dance in her bedroom when she was growing up; too nervous to perform in front of an audience. ‘I was so shy I couldn’t talk to anyone, I used to talk only when needed. I was a good student and I used to keep my head in my books,’ Subhreet remembers. ‘Dancing was a love of mine but it was never something I thought I’d ever do professionally.’

How this model overcame bullies

For Shaholly Ayers, who was born without a right arm below her elbow, "no" is something she's used to hearing. As a child, her teachers told her she wouldn't be able to participate in gym class. As a teenager, coaches told her she wouldn't make the basketball team — how could she dribble or shoot baskets without two hands? And then in college, as she set out to pursue her dream of becoming a fashion model, an agency she approached was blunt: It just wouldn't work. "I talked to one of the agents," Ayers, who lives in Honolulu, Hawaii, recalled during an interview with TODAY Style. "And she told me, 'There's no way you're going to be a model because you don't have two arms.' I tried to explain — I have a prosthesis, I can wear that — really trying to sell it." But she was still rejected. That day, about 10 years ago, Ayers decided to take action.

Lauren Steadman

Incredible Paralympian Lauren tells how her ageing grandma recognised her in a rare moment as she danced romantic routine on TV Paralympian Lauren Steadman barely recognised herself as she waltzed across the Strictly ballroom in a pink dress, making her nervous debut last Saturday night. Yet nearly 100 miles away, in front of the TV in her care home in Peterborough, her nan, Jackie — these days increasingly lost in a fog of dementia — knew instantly that the dancer on-screen was her beautiful granddaughter. Even though her family had not told her Lauren was competing on the show. The knowledge that she brought joy to 72-year-old Jackie’s world, if just for a fleeting moment, means more to Lauren than any judge’s score.

LIFE AFTER LIMB LOSS Almost a year ago I was in an accident that took part of my left leg. I was fortunate to get a prosthetic leg relatively soon after which put me on track to being active again without feeling like I missed a beat. I am so thankful every day that I get to walk and do the things I love. Each day is so spectacular. Life can change in a day, like mine did, for better or worse. I never take my time for granted anymore. Time is only lent to us. You can grow so much in a day. I feel like I don't have time to be unhappy. I love my life and I believe it is supposed to stand for something great. I've gotten used to the challenges. A problem might just be a new and exciting take on life. I've gotten to learn things I never would have known before.

Ashley Sherman one arm

In no way do I find myself disabled. Just different. I was born a twin missing my right arm just below the elbow. The way my parents raised my sister and I we grew up living a completely normal life. Or as normal as it gets when you live on a farm with 14 horses at any given time! I have worked with, taken care of and trained horses for as long as I can remember. Growing up showing horses, competing against able bodied competitors, and winning multiple awards and championships I was never viewed as disabled by my friends and family. Now that I'm older and am working as a scuba diver at an Orlando aquarium I meet a lot of people from all over the world.

Brenna Huckaby

Brenna Huckaby, 22, due to take part in her first Paralympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in March, stars in this year's edition in striking shots taken by photographer James Macari on a stunning beach in Aruba. The three-time world championship gold medalist had her right leg amputated after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2010, but hasn't let it keep her from becoming one of the best in her sport.
